Overview

The goal was to design a web game to educate elementary school children about the field to fork cycle.

We decided to do an “I-spy” game where the character walks around the level finding the objects related to that step in the food cycle.

My role as the group leader was to assign tasks to everyone, communicate with the client and the web development group, to create designs with the group and to organize the files for the final package delivered to the client

Project Objective

  • Create and outline how the story and gameplay will work
  • Design each screen/ level of the game
  • Use the Durham College brand guidlines for colours and fonts
  • Deliver assets to the web team to create a working prototype of the game
  • Have a final package with a document outlining the game and of all the levels and assets we created

The Process

We started out by doing research, and in our research we found 5-6 different steps in the food cycle; production, processing, distribution, retail/selling, consumption, waste management.

Then we brainstormed different ways the game could work and settled on a story. The player will play as their selected character following the cycle of tomatoes from being grown to waste by playing through 5 different themed levels, each level is themed on a step in the cycle.

We started creating rough sketches of what we thought the game could look like as well as different logos and vegetables. About halfway through the project it was decided we should switch directions with the designs and go with a more futuristic theme, resulting in the final designs we have now, one of which I created.

See the rough protoype of the game below:
